Philip Sugden

While we have shown his picture last year in a Art bit we did, we have never shared Philip Sugden’s story and it is quite a story.

Born in England he immigrated with his mother and brother to Findlay when he was eight years old. After graduating from Findlay High School he was drafted and served in the Navy on a black ops submarine during Vietnam. When his tour of duty was finished he went to New York and studied art at the New York School of Visual Arts. He then moved to Paris to get his Master’s at the American Academy of Art.

After college he traveled the world visiting India and to date 46 other countries. In 1984 he met a girl and came back to Findlay. He is married to Carol Elchert and they were joined in matrimony in Tibet by a Lama priest.

Philip is an amazing artist and his work has been displayed in many galleries. He and Carol have published two books that display her writing skills and his artwork. He currently is the Chair of the Art department at Bluffton University.

Philip’s words of wisdom are, “Live in the moment, that’s all there is.”

He really likes Findlay as it is “friendly and you can count on your friends.”
