We had a great interview with Chief Gregory Horne who for 30 years has been taking part in keeping Findlay safe.
He started as a part-time officer and has worked his way up the ranks to oversee a department of 58 officers and a total of 62 employees. He graduated from Liberty Benton and then received a four year degree from Bowling Green State University in Criminal Justice. Chief Horne went through the police academy when it was held by the Findlay Police Department at Findlay High School.
He has seen great changes in policing since his early days as a beat officer where it was one officer on a call and you had to use your head and communication skills to defuse a situation. There have been great advances in computer/technology that assist his officers in policing our community. There is a big push to get back to meet and greets, adopting neighborhoods and learning programs like CIT for handling and de-escalating what could be dangerous situations.
Findlay Police department is regularly audited by outside agencies and ranks very high overall in meeting all standards. They have been commended for their police work and very low use of force.
Chief Horne is married and has three children, two grown, a son and daughter who he is very proud of and a 12 year old daughter who he adores and keeps him busy with traveling basketball and soccer. The family is very involved in St. Michael’s Church activities. The Chief also has a Golden Retriever named Molly who he enjoys going on long walks with.
His role models were his father who taught him how to be a good parent and supported him, and his Field Training Officer who trained him when he first hit the streets. Officer Pat Farrell always did things right, was a stickler on reports and taught the Chief how to talk to people.
The Chief describes Findlay as a proud city with a sense of community and who are proud of caring for their yards and homes.
