Charles Chuck Gierke

The next time you visit the library and notice how clean and inviting it is, say a quiet thanks to Chuck Gierke who has been a janitor there for the past 18 years. Chuck is a quiet unassuming man who has served his community, country, and family his entire life.

A lifer here in Findlay he graduated from the old Findlay High School in 1949. He immediately went to work at Smith’s Brothers Machinery making auto parts. He joined the Army and served during the Korean Conflict as a ski storm trooper in Alaska. From there he was employed at Marathon in maintenance and security for 37 years. Upon retirement he then worked with his nephew on a cross-country trucking route helping him all across the United States.

Chuck has been married to his wife Alma for 55 years. They married in 1960 and have three children, two girls and a boy. They like to travel and have been on road trips to Los Angeles and the Southwest.

Chuck is a very quiet low-key person but is constantly on the move. He believes the “body needs movement.” His motto is “Got to keep active.” He has a brother who is 90 and is “still kicking.”
