Herb and Angie Carter

Today is a first. We were blessed to interview the Carters, Herb and Angie, both Majors in the Salvation Army here in Findlay and though they are a couple for the past 30 years they each have a story to tell so we are doing a two-part story. We start with Herb Carter.

“I was a recipient of a trip to a Salvation Army summer camp in Syracuse, New York. I was so impressed I became a camp counselor.” From there he felt drawn to the Methodist based ministry of SA and he was off to officer training school where he spent two years learning about the seminary, business administration, social services, accounting and resource development. It was here he met his future bride Angie, who was also a officer cadet. Herb was commissioned and ordained in 1985. He and his wife have served in Ohio, Vermont, Massachusetts and back in Ohio before being assigned six years ago to Findlay , Ohio.

He enjoys working with the Salvation Army for its efforts to meet the temporal and emotional needs of the people of his area. It is a sharing of the gospel coupled with practical solutions. The slogan the SA goes by is “Soup, Soap, Salvation.” He is currently in charge of the Findlay branch’s administration and finances but wears many hats as they serve, preach and network with the community.

He and Angie have three children aged 27, 25 and 17. (Their middle son is in the SA as an officer also.) They have two grand babies and one on the way.

When not wearing the uniform he loves anything outdoors, fishing hunting archery and camping. He also likes drawing with charcoal, tinkering and baking wedding cakes.

His verse is in Psalms: “Be still and know that I am God.”

Part two of the Major Carter legacy):

Major Angie Carter is the other half of the duo that runs the Salvation Army here in Findlay and Hancock County. A life long association with the SA led her to follow it as a career path herself. Both her parents were officers in the SA and traveled all over the country. They were actually stationed here in Findlay when Angie was born in the Blanchard Valley hospital. Years later she was surprised to be assigned and return to her birth town of Findlay. Angie and her siblings have all followed their parents and have become involved in the mission of the Salvation Army. She felt called to the ministry when she was 19.

It was in her officer training that she met her future husband Herb. They married right after receiving their commission and will celebrate 30 years in the near future.

Angie is responsible for the social programs here locally and the social work areas. She oversees the communication and networking areas and is the leader of the afterschool programs. She shares the pulpit with her husband on Sundays.

She is proud of her children who range in age from 17 to 25 and have given her two grand children and another on the way.
She spends her free time gardening, camping and riding bikes with her family. She has also taken up fishing recently.

She has a favorite scripture that keeps her grounded. Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

It was her parents who provided her with a model to follow in life. They taught her to give and love “with your whole heart” and spent 45 years in the Salvation Army. They never stopped working and never put the children second to their career.

It is her goal and dream to help the working poor and help them change their life circumstances
