Boyd Davis III

We could write a book on this next young man. He is such an shining inspiration and example of facing and overcoming diversity with positive outlooks on living and dying.

Boyd Davis III was born 32 years ago to Brenda and Boyd Davis Jr. at Blanchard Valley Hospital,. He had a good and normal childhood that he says was “highlighted by the great teachers he had at Wilson Vance, Central Middle school and at Findlay High school.” He was on the football team, and was a member of the FFE show choir. While he struggled and claims to have been an “average” student even when he studied up to eight hours a night, he was popular and was elected Homecoming King for his outgoing and positive personality.

After graduation he went to BGSU and received his degree in education and his teaching license. Student teaching showed him that maybe teaching wasn’t the direction he wanted to go so he looked at other options. He focused on Physical therapy and after taking premed classes at Owens Community College he was accepted into the PT program at the University of Findlay. Here life took a turn…

As he was starting his classes he kept having a recurring pain in his back and kidneys . It discovered at the Cleveland Clinic that he had a very aggressive bone cancer attached to one of his kidneys and the prognosis was not real positive. He had surgery and began chemotherapy every other week for 40 hours. This was while he was trying to hold his own in very tough classes. He was supported by staff and fellow students but given no special treatment. If he missed a class or test he would fail. He was able to fight through even though he lost his hair, forty pounds and turned pale gray, earning all A’s and 1 B for grades. He was able to do this because he believes he was born with a gift to survive and endure.

He was never afraid of dying even though it was a possibility with this cancer. “I had lived such a full life that if at 24 I was to die I was cool with that. It was my desire to graduate, marry and have a family that keep me going on.”
He has done just that. He survived, married his lovely wife Kellyn and they have two young boys, Boyd the IV and Briggs. Boyd has earned a second Masters’ degree and works for a local physical therapy company. His entire story can be seen on you tube and UFTV.
