Destiny VanHorn
Over a year ago when we first approached Destiny VanHorn to do a story on her and her horses she was so shook up she let a horse step on her and break both the fibula and tibia in her leg. After several surgeries, a metal rod, a plate and numerous screws implanted, she is back on her feet.
We met her in her barn where she stables six of the horses she uses to train youngsters to care for, ride and show horses. This includes Juju, the Shetland pony shown here in addition with …her guard llama!! She currently has eleven students under her tutelage and would love to expand further. Her mom and dad supported her desire to get into raising horses helping her obtain her first horse at the age of 12.
Destiny is a busy lady. She works in a local doctors office full time and is carrying her first child, a daughter, who is due on February 12th. (The best day to be born…editor’s note!) She is married to Keith whom she has known since kindergarten and they just moved to a small farm.
Destiny was born and raised here in Findlay and “I will never leave!” She graduated from Liberty Benton in 2009. While there she earned the American Degree, the highest degree in FFA. Less than 2% of all members achieve this honor. After high school she attended Owens Community College where she earned an Associates degree in Business Accounting.
She credits her Nana, Lyn Benavides, as a driving force in shaping her life. “Nana has fought cancer twice, still works and let’s nothing stop her. This helped me during my recovery.” Destiny has learned life is full of surprises and has taken away a lesson from this. “I look at life as whatever it is , it is. There is no reason to get upset. Just deal with it and stay positive!”
